Nā Kau ʻElua | The Two Seasons was composed in celebration of a new oboe constructed by Howarth of London from Kauila wood (alphitonia ponderosa) native to Kōkeʻe, Kauaʻi, and from a tree thought to be 200-300 years of age. The 12-movement, 40-minute oboe concerto (not to worry, there is a shorter suite version!) combines musical materials from Antonio Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” (1721) and 12 lunar months’ worth of inspired everyday uses of kauila wood, a now precious wood, by the people of old Hawaiʻi (poʻe kahiko). Commissioned by J. Scott Janusch and Live Music Awareness, as part of the Hawaiian Oboe Legacy Project.
