In this string orchestra arrangement of Gabriel Fauré’s Pavane in F-sharp minor, Op. 50, the violoncello is given the famous lyrical solo. Originally composed in 1887 for piano, it is now most famous for its orchestral version, which includes an optional chorus and was performed in 1888. Despite its fame, Fauré described the piece as “elegant, but not otherwise important,” and its tempo is often performed more slowly than Fauré originally intended.
