The composer writes: “In composing Fleet, for violin and piano, I was inspired by music’s ability to be perceived as a tangible, physical form – a mountain, a river, a winding road – and its capacity to capture the feeling or essence of a place. As a child, I loved to watch the ocean and birds from high atop Kauaʻiʻs Kīlauea Point, and Fleet is essentially a portrait of that place and time. Quick, ascending and descending scales contrast with longer melodic lines and boisterously playful rhythms, with a finale-like ending. The 5- to 6-minute piece is dedicated to Tom Osborne and the UH Contemporary Music Ensemble.”
