“Meditation for Ah Quon” plays with different melodic treatments (inversion, augmentation) of the popular work movement song, “The People United Will Never Be Defeated”, which composer Frederic Rzewsky masterfully treated in his solo piano work of the same name. “Meditation for Ah Quon” is one of several pieces for solo piano in Magnussen’s 2024 score for the PBS Hawaiʻi documentary “Ah Quon McElrath: The Struggle Never Ends”, which tells the story of one woman’s compassionate determination which helped lift thousands of families out of poverty.
